Director of Writing and Communication Across the Curriculum
The University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), a public honors university, is seeking a Director of Writing to provide leadership for its Writing Intensive (WI) program. The Director will report to the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education and will have the primary task of providing support for a campus-wide program of WI-designated courses to meet a newly established General Education requirement and for other initiatives to foster writing across the disciplines. The Director will provide support to academic departments and individual faculty in the process of integrating writing into the curriculum. Support will range from assistance in developing, maintaining, and assessing WI courses to providing workshops or symposia for faculty and staff.
The position is full-time, with either professional administration or faculty status (applicants should indicate which they seek). Preference is for a senior candidate, with demonstrated success in the field of writing across the disciplines. Faculty status would be on a tenured (or tenure-track) basis, with faculty rank open, dependent upon the record in scholarship, teaching, and service. Review for faculty appointment will involve consultation with the appropriate academic department, and appointment will require the department’s concurrence.
Requires a doctoral degree in English, Rhetoric, Composition, Education or a comparable, related field and significant teaching, research and/or administrative experience in the area of WI initiatives. The position requires a candidate with proven leadership ability, effectiveness in working collaboratively, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Position is full-time and includes full University benefits package.
