The English Department at Fairfield University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning Fall 2016. We welcome candidates prepared to contribute to an exciting new major in Digital Journalism, situated in a multi-disciplinary English department with thriving undergraduate concentrations in writing and literary studies and an MFA program in Creative Writing.
The successful candidate will teach a 3-3 load in the general education core, including freshman composition, introductory journalism courses such as News Writing, plus advanced courses in areas of specialization. The successful candidate also will have opportunities to teach at the graduate level and in such interdisciplinary programs as American Studies, Applied Ethics, Black Studies, Peace and Justice Studies, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
A Ph.D. in a relevant academic field is required; ABD candidates will be considered if they will have a degree in hand by September 1, 2016. Desired areas of specialization include digital storytelling and cross-platform journalism that could aid all English majors. Secondary interests in literary journalism, digital rhetorics, using social media as a research tool, semantic web analysis, and the rhetoric of web design are desirable.
A demonstrated record of successful teaching at the undergraduate level is required, as well as a commitment to innovation and demonstrated excellence in using technology in the classroom. The ideal candidate will have both academic and practical background related to digital journalism and writing. Applicants are expected to have an active research agenda in a relevant area. There also is an expectation of all full-time faculty performing in a Service role at the university.
