The Department

The Department of English and Writing Studies is one of four departments within University College. Through its innovative general education core curriculum, the Colloquy on Integrated Learning, University College offers students a high-quality, foundational, liberal-arts program, designed to prepare them for their future majors and professional careers. The experience instills in the students a desire for lifelong learning, fosters intellectual curiosity, and engenders critical thinking. The Colloquy program initiates the baccalaureate careers of all ZU students and has as its goal to build students’ understanding of their relation to the world and to equip them to be successful at the University, in their professions and in their personal lives through an integrated, skill-rich, interdisciplinary core curriculum.

The Department of English and Writing Studies is currently responsible for providing instruction to students in order to help them improve their written and oral English language skills. Faculty in the department help develop the English language competency of students in the general education program as well as in the majors of the students’ choice. Departmental instruction ensures that students meet the University’s standards on the use of the English language at entry, intermediate and graduation levels. The department has primary responsibility for delivering the Zayed University Learning Outcome for adept use of the English language by all its graduates.

The Opportunity

The Department of English and Writing Studies is seeking Assistant/Associate/Full Professors of Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, and English for Academic Purposes, conversant with English as a Second Language, who will be able to contribute to the English composition and writing-in-the-disciplines curriculum. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in teaching. You will demonstrate excellence in student-centered teaching; University College is committed to student success and seeks faculty who are committed to ensuring it. We seek faculty who possess a strong commitment to teaching the University’s core curriculum, and are advocates of general education as understood in the US model of education. You will be familiar with a sophisticated college rhetoric and composition curriculum; you will value teaching 100 and 200 level courses; you are committed to your discipline and contribute to its knowledge base via conference presentations and an increasingly strong record of publication. You will be inclined to contribute to an ongoing process of curricular revision and be involved in the design and development of the set menu of courses. Teaching load at Zayed University is established at four courses per semester with a possibility of reallocated time for research pursuits with tangible deliverables. The Requirements

· Terminal degree in Rhetoric and Composition, Applied Linguistics, TESOL, or a related field.

· Commitment to innovative language development pedagogies and student-centered learning.

· Experience in working with second-language learners or in international contexts is essential.

· Relevant baccalaureate-level teaching experience and active research interests.

· Experience with multi-section university-level language development courses.

· Experience with writing-across-the-curriculum programs, effective assessment protocols, writing in the disciplines, technical writing or writing centers.
