NCoW Interview Questions

To ensure consistency among all NCoW interviewers, please use the questions below. All interviews should include (and perhaps begin with) question one, "Are you a writer?" Following that question, please choose 3-4 questions. The goal here is to gather a wide range of responses to these questions. Of course, follow up on responses that are particularly compelling, lively, and/or intriguing - use your instincts!

Before interviewing, be sure to read the NCoW technical specs, which include instructions for both conducting and filming interviews.

2006 WPA Summer Workshop, Conference, and Institutes

It will soon be time to finalize your plans for participating in the 2006 WPA Summer Workshop, Institutes, and Conference, July 9-16 in Chattanooga.

The Workshop this year will be led by Lauren Fitzgerald (Yeshiva University) and Greg Glau (Arizona State University), and will be held at the Holiday Inn Choo Choo in Chattanooga, Tennessee from Sunday evening, July 9 through Wednesday evening, July 12. The Assessment Institute will focus on â€œElectronic Portfolios, Writing Classrooms, and College Programs: Practices, Theories, Issues, and Challenges,â€ led by Elizabeth Clark (La Guardia Community College), Michael Day (Northern Illinois University), and Kathleen Blake Yancey (Florida State University), and will be held on the University of Tennessee Chattanooga campus on Thursday, July 13. WPA will hold elections for three Executive Board members this spring.

Executive Board members election:

We will be saying goodbye and thank you to Executive Board members Lauren Fitzgerald, Greg Glau, and Raul Sanchez. We therefore invite your nominations for three Executive Board members to replace those rotating off. The Executive Board oversees the WPA, its events, and its activities; creates policies and procedures for its management; and engages in special projects and initiatives. The new board members will serve for three years, with terms beginning in July of 2006.

The CWPA Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the election of Susan Kay Miller from Mesa Community College (AZ) to membership on the CWPA Executive Board. Susan will be serving in the position left open by Cynthia Martin's resignation. Her term will end June 30, 2007.

Professor Miller is a full-time faculty member in the English department at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, where she teaches writing, linguistics, and English as a second language. She is especially interested in two-year college writing programs, second language writers, and effective ways of incorporating technology into writing instruction. She currently serves as the chair of the Composition Committee in her English department, a group which recently led a successful three-year effort to revise the previous, current-traditional first-year composition curriculum with a rhetorically-based approach inspired by the WPA Outcomes Statement. The new curriculum was adopted throughout the Maricopa Community College District in April 2005 and will affect over 80,000 students district-wide. The success of this effort has encouraged the Composition Committee to lobby for a permanent WPA at Mesa Community College, a position which has never existed in any of the English departments in the district.

Note: This framework is based on (and uses material from) the WPA statement on plagiarism, Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism: The WPA Statement on Best Practices. Media messages based on this framework should acknowledge the WPA statement as their source.

In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else"s language, ideas, or other original (not common knowledge) material without acknowledging its source.
