NCoW Interview Questions

To ensure consistency among all NCoW interviewers, please use the questions below. All interviews should include (and perhaps begin with) question one, "Are you a writer?" Following that question, please choose 3-4 questions. The goal here is to gather a wide range of responses to these questions. Of course, follow up on responses that are particularly compelling, lively, and/or intriguing - use your instincts!

Before interviewing, be sure to read the NCoW technical specs, which include instructions for both conducting and filming interviews.

New WPA Poll: Stay on the job permanently or rotate in and out?

Dear WPA member:
Please consider participating in a poll asking the following question:

"Are writing programs are better served by WPAs who remain in their jobs permanently or by WPAs who rotate in and out of the job?"

http://wpacouncil.org/node/273

You will need to log in to vote.

A similar question was asked by Linda Peterson in a survey conducted in 1985 and reported in the Spring 1987 issue of WPA.

November 2005

NMA Campaign Issue: Citizenship and Writing Courses

NMA message frameworks are intended as starting points for NMA members to create their own messages. These might include (but are not limited to) letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, comments for local radio or television stations, and so on. Remember: the more locally grounded your message, the more likely it is to be included in local media. Feel free to add information based on your experience, your class, and/or your writing program.

Susan Kay Miller Elected to WPA Executive Board

The CWPA Nominating Committee is pleased to announce the election of Susan Kay Miller from Mesa Community College (AZ) to membership on the CWPA Executive Board. Susan will be serving in the position left open by Cynthia Martin's resignation. Her term will end June 30, 2007.

Professor Miller is a full-time faculty member in the English department at Mesa Community College in Mesa, Arizona, where she teaches writing, linguistics, and English as a second language. She is especially interested in two-year college writing programs, second language writers, and effective ways of incorporating technology into writing instruction. She currently serves as the chair of the Composition Committee in her English department, a group which recently led a successful three-year effort to revise the previous, current-traditional first-year composition curriculum with a rhetorically-based approach inspired by the WPA Outcomes Statement. The new curriculum was adopted throughout the Maricopa Community College District in April 2005 and will affect over 80,000 students district-wide. The success of this effort has encouraged the Composition Committee to lobby for a permanent WPA at Mesa Community College, a position which has never existed in any of the English departments in the district.

Hi, Board Members:

The voting for the approval of the NMA plagiarism framework is ready:

http://wpacouncil.org/node/99

To vote, you need to log in with your username and password. If you haven't modified your account yet, your username was originally set to be your email address (case sensitive, and exactly as you see it written when you receive system notifications, if you have). You will need that or your email address in case you lose your passwor. Here's what the system thinks your username is:

%username

The vote will expire in 4 days. Only WPA Board members can vote.

Digital WPA

Hello, WPA Members:

We're pleased to announce that Digital WPA, the new website for the Council of Writing Program Administrators, is now online and ready for you to use. As you'll see, the site offers a wide variety of content--including position statements, journal archives, announcements, the Network for Media Action, member information, a WPA Guide, and more. It also includes forums, a news aggregator, collaborative books, and other interactive features that will help members communicate with each other. Many thanks to Charlie Lowe, our consultant on this project, to the WPA Executive Board, and all others who contributed ideas to this effort in its early stages.

NMA Campaign Issue: Plagiarism

A Note About NMA Message Frameworks
NMA message frameworks are intended as starting points for NMA members to create their own messages. These might include (but are not limited to) letters to the editor, op-ed pieces, comments for local radio or television stations, and so on. Remember: the more locally grounded your message, the more likely it is to be included in local media. Feel free to add information based on your experience, your class, and/or your writing program.

NMA Message Framework - Plagiarism

Note: This framework is based on (and uses material from) the WPA statement on plagiarism, Defining and Avoiding Plagiarism: The WPA Statement on Best Practices. Media messages based on this framework should acknowledge the WPA statement as their source.

In an instructional setting, plagiarism occurs when a writer deliberately uses someone else"s language, ideas, or other original (not common knowledge) material without acknowledging its source.
